AI & Philosophy | AI companions - friend or foe?

About this event
In a time where loneliness and social isolation are at epidemic levels, more people are turning to AI "companions" - chat bots that can be designed to act like friends, lovers, mentors or therapists.
The loneliness economy is booming. In this session we ask whether companion chatbots are an innovative and necessary solution to a problem, or the beginning of a two tiered system where real human connection becomes the domain of the privileged and the rest of us have to make do with sub-standard imitations.
The discussion will be based on "Love Machines" by James Muldoon. But don't worry if you haven't read the book - in preparation for the session have a look at a few AI companion sites and consider the value people get from these products.
What needs do these bots fulfil? What are the ethical and societal implications? Are you for or against?
Join us for a lively debate.
