Ethics Discussion: Big AI & what we can do about it

About this event
We can’t imagine our life today without Artificial Intelligence (AI), but not all AI systems are created equal. The vast majority of them are built for specific applications, such as medical diagnostics or self-driving cars. These "narrow AI" systems are rigorously tested for safety, and they can be very useful.
This can not be said about “Big AI” systems exploiting Large Language Models (LLMs). These systems are marketed for general use that makes it nearly impossible to evaluate them for safety and efficiency in all possible use-cases. The benefits of these systems are likely over-hyped, while their harms and risks are very real. They range from mass unemployment and psychological harm to unsustainable demand for energy and other resources and existential risks of runaway superintelligence.
Despite all these issues and risks, the race towards superhuman AI continues unabated. The main driving force of this race is market and competitive pressures enabled by our collective ignorance and complacency. It’s time to realize that we need AI, but we do not need Big AI, for national security and competitiveness. Big AI has big brains, big models, big money, and big power. What it does not have is big public support. Only we, the people, can stop Big AI from taking over our democracy and the world. This is a political problem that needs a political solution.
Michael Abramson leads the discussion.
