In this episode, I sit down with griot, author, and ancestral strategist Barbara Ohuninifa, founder of the Beautiful Powerful Love movement, for a conversation about storytelling as ancestral technology and what it means for Black women to remember who they truly are. Barbara's journey from 25 years in corporate America at Johnson & Johnson, Unilever, and Microsoft, through an aortic dissection that changed everything, to becoming a digital nomad and griot serving Black women's liberation is the proof of concept. And she is making the case that Black women are not incidental to global liberation — we are the engine of it.

Barbara shares how a 2017 aortic dissection became the spiritual turning point that forced her onto her true path — dying three times during 50 days in intensive care, and knowing from that hospital bed that she had to finish her book. She speaks honestly about ignoring the signs her body had been sending for years, and connects that pattern directly to what Black women are collectively conditioned to do: keep going, keep providing, keep proving.

She makes a layered, data-driven case for why Black women are the engine of global liberation — from the Haitian Revolution being sparked by a ceremony uniting divine feminine and sacred masculine, to the research embedded in Project 2025 that specifically studied Black women's matriarchal networks as the organizing infrastructure of enslaved communities. If they know, she says, then we need to know too.

And she closes with the reminder that the work does not begin with activism or strategy. It begins with one question: what does my body need right now?
